The Christmas is coming! I’m excited for all the events, parties, celebrations but it can get really overwhelming. On the days I feel anxious and overwhelmed with Lagos and the world, I always resort to some simple self care tips to help boost my mood and make me feel better. Sometimes, you need to work on yourself and make yourself happy before you can go and celebrate that happiness with other people. Here are my five self care tips for December.
- Treat yourself anyway you can (big or small)
The whole treat yourself mentality can get very warped but it is a mentality that needs to stick around. Treating yourself doesn’t mean ignoring responsibilities and going on vacation. It means rewarding yourself for getting through a long day with ice cream. Or maybe taking a lazy nap on a weekend. It means taking some extra time out for your skincare. Doing these little and small things that make you happy for yourself will make a huge difference in the long run. For me, getting a massage at Apples and Oranges last week was the beginning of my December self care ritual. I got the Apples and Oranges Signature Massage and it made me feel so good. They have a wide range of massages to help you at any point of your life. Go check them out and enjoy a service or two. You’ll be glad you did.
2. Sleep more
Yeah, you’re probably not sleeping right and you need to fix that. Instead of letting the Lagos buste and wahala kill you, take a few extra mins of sleep or take a nap on the weekends (missing that afternoon brunch won’t kill you) but missing out on sleep can. Research shows that not getting enough sleep, or getting poor-quality sleep, increases the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, and diabetes. Yikes!
3. Watch a new show
With Netflix being in Nigeria, I have been catching up on a lot of shows lately. Recently just finished season 4 of Brooklyn Nine Nine, started but stopped The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (not a fan) and have fallen in love with Riverdale. Just taking some time out and enjoying tv shows is a really fun and great self care tip. Lose yourself in a new world during the day and go out partying in Lagos by night.
4. Switch off your phone for a few hours
I know this is tough but taking a digital detox is needed once in a while. Sometimes, switch off your data and allow the world of social media to pass you by. It will still be there when you switch your phone back on and you’ll catch up on every single scandal. Sometimes, I take mini detoxes like an IG detox where I don’t open the IG app for an hour or so. I have found that Instagram sometimes triggers me and causes me to doubt myself and my abilities. Taking time off the app and finding myself has really helped me in this period and can help you too.
5. Drink water
I know – so simple yet so important. Drinking water is super important for your body, skin, hair, nails and your life; I don’t think I need to tell you anymore about the wonderful benefits of water. As your drinking cocktails and enjoying whiskey on the rocks, remember to get a bottle of water as well.
