I wrote a post last week about how being Shameless has helped my life as a blogger and in general and I got a few questions asking about how to be Shameless. I have never had that problem in my life – my friends will tell you I’m loud, bold, outgoing, and friendly. But when it came to blogging – that is a different story. I was never proud of myself as a blogger and whenever I met new people and they asked what I did, I would always say something snarky like ‘I wear makeup and clothes for a living’ or ‘Vanity is my middle name’. I never told anyone ‘I’m a blogger/content creator’. I don’t know if it was because I was ashamed because I got fired before I went full time or because I wasn’t making a huge income. I even had to ask my bestie Coco how to tell people what I did for a living. She looked at me and said ‘You’re a blogger. Say it like you are proud of it’
With that in mind, I slowly started to channel all the energy from my personal life and direct it to my blogging life. Slowly, my shame left me and my blog started to blossom. I didn’t understand what it was at first but the changes I started to make were producing results and I was loving it.
In today’s post, I’m going to teach you about my own brand of shamelessness. I’ll give you 5 quick but effective ways to help you become shameless about your blog, life and everything in between. I know it’s hard coming out of your shell especially if you have never been that bold person before. Take your time with yourself and allow yourself to open up naturally. Don’t force yourself or be fake because people can spot that a mile away.
Quick note – I did not come up with the Shameless movement. I’m going to give credit to the Queen of Shameless – Maya Washington. She started off as an actress/photographer who decided to be shameless about her work and life for a year to see what happened. With her Shameless ways, she turned into a Youtube star and influencer who has worked with so many brands and almost has 1 million subs. She is an inspiration to anyone who wants to take their creative life by the horns and turn it into something great. Subscribe to her Youtube channel and learn from the queen herself.
1. Attend events and talk to people
It’s really easy to go to an event and just be there but are you maximizing your attendance? Are you talking to people, collecting numbers, networking and being about all you do? Do you just attend events and stand in corners, mumbling to yourself and going home feeling like you wasted time?
Yeah, you need to do better.
I challenge you to talk and connect with one person at each event you attend. You dont’ have to talk about blogging and network like a robot – make conversation and genuinely connect with people. You never know who you can meet and who can give you opportunities you never imagined. I once went to a spa opening and was chatting with two ladies about my blog. I later found out that those two ladies are the owners of the spa and I ended up doing some paid work with them.
This leads me to my next point …
2.Talk with confidence about your blog and what you do
When they ask a doctor what he does, he says he’s a doctor. Same goes with an accountant, engineer, lawyer etc. When it comes to the creative industry, we find ways to dumb down and down play our talents and work. We aren’t bold and direct about what we do and I don’t know why. I was once like this and till this day, I’m still confused and baffled on why I would tell people my job is ‘wearing makeup and pretty clothes’.
Anywhere you go, talk confidently about what you do. Whether you’re a fashion blogger, a shoe maker, a wig maker or you sell Instagram bras,do it and speak about it with confidence. When you hide and downplay yourself, you’re telling people you’re not proud of what you do and that what you do isn’t all that great or important. My dear, you are important and what you do matters to the world.
3. Promote yourself on social media, shamelessly
This seems like a no brainer but it’s a bit deeper than you think. Are you just throwing up your blog links randomly and hoping people will click? When was the last time you tweeted about your Youtube video? Or that cool post you did with all the effects and editing?
It’s more than just posting the links to your blog and Youtube channel – it’s about doing it properly and shamelessly. Just don’t throw up the link and hope for the best – schedule that link to go up 2/3 times a day with a cute photo and funny caption (You can schedule your tweets with photos on Tweetdeck. It’s free and awesome).
Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and promote your work. I used to feel like promoting my work on social was tacky and people would get tired but I found that people don’t see your stuff the first time (busy lives and stuff) so you have to post about it over and over again so that people can see it. Consistency on social media is important if you want to buy your brand/blog. If you’re posting on your blog once a week, do that and be consistent with it. It will go a long way in helping your blog and brand grow
4. Don’t be afraid to ask for help
I feel like as bloggers, we think we can do everything on our own. We are our own editors, photographers, graphic designers, videographers, writers etc. Honestly, you can only go so far with that. At some point in time, you’re going to need to ask for help because you truly cannot do everything on your own. Being shameless is about embracing who you are and what you do and asking for help allows you to focus on that and leave the rest for someone that can do the work.
Shamelessly asking for help does not make you weak – it makes you strong. No one can do everything and you my dear are only human. So if you need a friend to help you out with some photos, ask. If you’re looking for a location to shoot your lookbook, ask around and beg people on the internet for help. If you’re looking for a drone to shoot your lookbook with, ASK! That’s what I did and found Oscar who helped me film the drone shots for my lookbook. All I did was put my pride aside and found someone to help me out. It’s literally that simple.
5. Do the unexpected by stepping out of your comfort zone
You cannot be shameless unless you do something that scares you. I’m not saying go skydiving or jump off a building. I’m saying plan and execute all those great ideas in your head. Those ideas are usually the ones that project you into the limelight and allow you to stand out from the crowd. Maya crashed New York Fashion Week with balloons, crazy hair and body guards! She wasn’t invited for any show but she went, showing up and showing out and now people know her name.
Find something that you have always wanted to do and do it. For me, it was doing a summer/swimwear lookbook that showed off my body. Contrary to popular belief, I’m not the most body confident person but I pushed all those thoughts aside and I did it. I loved doing that lookbook and the response I got was so positive that I’m looking forward to shooting another summer lookbook but this time, only swimwear.
I hope these 5 tips help you be shameless and help your blog and brand grow. Ask me any and all your questions in the comment section below and I will be happy to answer them!
