I discovered Daniel Caesar one random evening while browsing through my Apple Music playlists. I’m constantly on the search for new music and I download a lot of playlists to find new artists. His song ‘Get You’ featuring the beautiful Kali Uchis was featured in a playlist called ‘Me and Bae’ (I’m a sucker for great love songs) and it was love at first listen. I shared the song with Tunde and we were both instantly hooked by the smooth voice and beautiful lyrics. We had become Daniel Caesar fans instantly.

The next day, I went hunting for more music from him and I discovered ‘Japanese Denim’ and I knew I was dealing with a musician who was after my heart. That song is so sweet yet so tragic – no one can do that combination the way Daniel Caesar can. We anxiously waited for his album to drop but he released an EP with two sweet and beautiful songs – ‘We Find Love’ and ‘Blessed’. ‘Blessed’ is the song you sing to ya man when you know you a little crazy and messed up but he loves you anyway. I can personally relate to this song as I am slightly crazy and out there but Tunde loves me never the less

That’s not what today’s post is about.

He finally released his album – Freudian -on August 25th and it was everything I wanted and needed from him. Beautifully crafted melodies and lyrics combined with a soothing voice and church like hymns make this one of the strongest debuts this year. Here are 6 reasons why I love Daniel Caesar’s new album.

1. His silky smooth voice

Daniel is a chruch boy – grew up in chruch and sang in church. I feel like muscians who got their start in church are way more talented than their counterparts. Being in a church choir grooms you and pushes you to your very best and you can hear this religious influences in his voice and in his music. His voice is beautful, silky and smooth – just like an angel.

2. He knows how to tell a beautiful story

‘Freudian’ is a story about love, sex, heartbreak and getting back on your feet after a heartbreak that breaks your very soul. Everyone writes and sings about love – but not the way Daniel does it.The way he tells his story of love and loss is so different from anything I have heard. I love when a musician tells his own unique story in his own unique way. Daniel Caesar tells a beautiful story and tells is so so well.

3. It’s all about love and I love it

The album is about love and loss and as I said earlier in the post, I love love songs. I love a good generic love song but I’m a sucker for musicians who take the notion of love and turn it on it’s head and give me something new to think about. Freudian does that so so well. The song ‘Blessed’ on the album is a great example of this. Listen to the song and you’ll understand what I’m saying.

4. The album flows beautiful

When listening to Freudian, you won’t know when one song stops and when another one begins. The album flows smoothly from one track to the other and it creates a beautiful listening experience. Just sit back with a good book and a cup of tea and let the album just flow.

5. He teamed up with some of my favorite ladies

I don’t know if there is a hidden meaning in it but all the features on his album are women. Beautiful women with distinct voices. Kali Uchis, H.E.R, Syd and Charlotte Day Wilson add their voices to this album and they pair perfectly with him on their respective songs. They all sound so so good and I love it. Girl power!

6. The album is GOOD

It’s been a while since a whole album has felt so complete to me. There is nothing I would add or remove from this album. I love it so much and it makes me feel so good inside. The song writing, the melodies, the features, the flow – everything just makes sense. I love this album so so much and I think everyone should listen to it!
