Hello everyone and welcome to today’s post! Today, I’ll be reviewing and giving my thoughts on the Dark and Lovely Au Naturale line of products. Dark and Lovely launched their natural hair line ‘Au Naturale’ line last month in Nigeria (I was the host of the event. Check out that video HERE). Since then, I’ve been using the products and now, I finally have my thoughts and feelings about them all.
The Dark and Lovely Au Natural line has several products but they only launched four in Nigeria – The Moisture Replenishing Shampoo, The Knot Out Conditioner, The Afro Moisturizing Butter and The Plaiting Pudding Cream. I’ll be giving my thoughts and feelings of each of the products then I’ll give my general thoughts at the end of the post.
Moisture Replenishing Shampoo
This shampoo does clean your hair but if you’re not careful, it will stirp your hair of all the oils. My advice is to do a hot-oil treatment before you wash your hair with this or else you will end up with dried out hair. You HAVE to use a good moisturizing conditioner/deep treatment after using this.
I love this stuff. Smells great and does a great job of detangling my hair. It’s a great companion to the shampoo as it adds the moisture the shampoo took away.
My hair after shampoo and conditioner.
That is all the hair I lost during the detangling process. Not too bad in my opinion.
I covered my hair with my Frozen shower cap (lol) for about 15min. The sad thing is that the conditioner is NOT a deep conditioner. It’s only supposed to be in your hair for about 5 – 15 mins. I wish they launched a deep conditioner in this line – I would have loved to try it out.
Afro Moisturizing Butter
After rinsing my hair out, I used the Afro Moisturizing butter which is the hair cream of this line. It’s a good product that works well. It moisturized the hair aka it did it’s job.
This is how much product I used for each section of my hair. You don’t need a lot to make it work for you.
My hair in two puffs. I was getting my hair braided that day so I didn’t need to do bantu knots or style it. Check out the braided tutorial that Edwin did for me HERE
Plaiting Pudding Cream
This is the styling cream in the collection. This cream does not have a strong hold; it has a light/medium hold. I’ve done bantu knots with this cream/pudding three times and I get the same results – some definition and some frizz. I don’t mind that actually – some people want more of that afro look than a defined curl look. If you’re someone who wants defined curls, use this product but don’t play with your hair too much. It will become frizzy.
Here’s a photo of me hosting the Au Naturale launch. I did my hair using the all the products – the shampoo, conditioner, cream and plating pudding.
VERDICT: Out of the four products, I only like and recommend you can get three of them – the conditioner, the cream and the pudding. You can do without the shampoo honestly; it’s too stripping for natural hair in my opinion. I also wish they launched more products – there is a styling gel I used to use in America that has really good hold and will give your curls very good definition. I hope we get another drop of products soon.
WHERE TO BUY: These products are available at several supermarkets in Nigeria. Spar, Shoprite, Game and so on.
