I had the wonderful privilege of interviewing Jennifer Engels, the owner and facility director of Paradise Medspa Lekki. They are a premium American styled Spa in Lekki Phase 1 with a mission to change and raise the bar for spa and beauty industries in Nigeria.
Jennifer considers herself lucky as she knew from a very young age that she was a true creative and that she had a strong passion for fashion and beauty industry. She was always on the hunt for inspiration and constantly had her hands in something. She loved to work on people and help them to achieve their best looks with their skin and hair.
Read on to hear what she has to say about Paradise Medspa Lekki:
How does your salon differ from the competition that’s out there?
Answer: Our facility is very unique and you will not find anything like this around. We are a salon, medspa and medical center all under one roof. A one stop shop for all of your beauty, health and wellness needs. The downstairs is a full service hair salon, nail salon, men’s barbershop, facial and massage spa and last but not least a cosmetic procedure room where you can indulge in some of our most popular services such as laser teeth whitening, laser hair removal and acne/scar/stretch mark removal. The top floor is a full service medical practice for adults and children as my husband is an Internist as a professor of paediatrics and is accompanied by is registered nurses. We also have private hospital room where we have admissions.
How is it like opening a spa like this in Nigeria?
Answer: It’s been great so far. The only thing that can be challenging is that many people in Nigeria are not familiar with the term Medspa and therefore are not sure what to expect. It is my job to educate and define exactly what that term means. And to be honest I have worked in many different countries and I can honestly say is that beauty is universal. The products, styles and cultures may be different but everyone wants to look and feel their best. That does not change based on location.
What’s a typical work week like?
Answer: We are open 7 days a week in an effort to best serve our clients. Monday thru Saturday from 9am until 8pm and then on Sunday from 1pm until 7pm.
What do you do with a new client coming in for skin care treatment?
Answer: One of the first things we do is have the client fill out a detailed medical history form. Most clients are not aware of how your health, medicines and overall wellness can affect your skin condition and could also be the root cause for many unfavorable conditions. The client and I will then discuss medical history and I will analyze the skin to determine the best treatment protocol for them.
What is your signature or specialty treatment?
Answer: The Rejuvapen. It is a machine that we use to get rid of acne scars, stretch marks and wrinkles. We have amazing results and success with this machine and it transforms people’s lives and the way they view themselves.
What is the most enjoyable part of your job?
Answer: Client relations! I absolutely treasure the beautiful relationships I get to form with my clients and with the community.
What is most challenging about what you do?
Answer: The unpredictability from day to day of being a start-up. Everyday can be an adventure.
What advice do you have for those wanting to go into your career field?
Answer: Do everything you can to get as much education and experience as you can. Never stop learning and think that you know everything as the beauty and fashion industry is constantly changing. Be a professional!
