Skincare is not hard. It honestly isn’t! Every other day, I see people asking each other ‘drop your skincare routine’; we are constantly on the lookout for the secret to great skin. I’m here to tell you that great skin is very, very easy to achieve. It takes a bit of trial and error and dedication to a skincare routine but in the long run, your skin will thank you for it.
This is my essential guide to great skin

1. Cleanse your skin twice a day
Washing your face everyday (twice please) is really important if you want great skin. It cleans your pores of all the dirt and grime of the day and prevents breakouts as well. You need to find a cleanser that works for your skin type. I have oily/combination skin so I use the Cetaphil Normal to Oily Skin cleanser. It’s available at many pharmacies here in Nigeria or you can buy it online HERE or HERE
2. Exfoliate your skin 2 -3 times a week
Exfoliating your skin is necessary to remove dead skin cells and buildup from your skin. Some scrubs are gentle enough to use everyday and some can only be used 2 -3 times a week. A good scrub won’t hurt and won’t feel like you’re rubbing sand on your face. There are several in the market but I trust the Neutrogena scrubs. Get some HERE or HERE.
3. Always remove your makeup before you go to bed
This is a no-brainer if you want great Skin. Wearing your makeup is terrible for the skin as it ages you and can lead to breakouts. I know it’s hard cleaning off your makeup after a long day or even after a roaring night out but please do. You can simply use some makeup wipes to remove your makeup or if you have really light makeup on, you can use micellar water. Buy some HERE, HERE, HERE or HERE.
4. No matter what skin type you have, always moisturize your skin
Always! There is a moisturizer for every skin type. I know people with oily skin will say ‘But my skin is oily, I can’t add more oil to it’ but you have to understand that moisture is NOT oil! Moisturizing your skin with the right moisturizers can help your skin look radiant and glowy without looking like a mess. You just need to find the moisturizer that works well with your skin. I use the Yves Rocher Sabo Vegetal Gel moisturizer and my face loves it! You can buy it at the Yves Rocher store at Novare Mall. Another great moisturizer for oily skin is the Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisturizer. Buy that HERE or HERE
5. Use a mask once or twice a week
A good mask will do wonders for your skin. Face masks can help hydrate skin, remove excess oils and help improve the appearance of your pores. They can also pull out the gunk from your pores. Different people with different skin types use different types of masks. I have oily/combination skin so I use the Queen Helene Mint Julep Clay mask. I use it mostly on weekends as skin prep before I get ready for an event/wedding. You can buy it HERE or HERE
6. Research and invest in oils
I admit; working with oils is a bit tricky but once you find the ones that work, you’ll use time all the time. There are so many oils out there that have great properties that can help your skin. You can use them alone or add them to your bath water, lotions, masks, creams etc. I use two main essential oils – tea tree and lemongrass. Tea tree helps with breakouts and pimples while lemongrass helps with my hyperpigmentation. I’ve been using these two oils in my routine for about 2 years and my skin has cleared up significantly. I can’t not use these oils. You can buy some tea tree oil HERE/HERE and lemongrass oil HERE/HERE
7. Drink water and stop drinking so much coke/fanta/sprite
Drink as much water as you can and reduce how much soda you drink. It will make a HUGE difference in your skin; believe me. I used to drink coke everyday but when I stopped and upped my water intake, my skin began to clear up and I got less and less breakouts. Water is vital for organ health, glowy skin and hair. Drinking more water is a lifestyle change that may take some getting used to but believe me, it will work.
